A Letter to My Lawmakers

I am appalled at the anti-science sentiment and the disregard for rationality that is being fostered upon New York State.  Here are facts from WebMD: "Fertilization happens when a sperm meets and penetrates an egg. It's also called conception. At this moment, the genetic makeup is complete, including the sex of the baby."  I believe you know what this means: at the moment of conception, an unrepeatable set of genes are created.  Unrepeatable.  Irreplaceable.  A different human being with a different genetic makeup is inside the mother's womb.  At 8 weeks, the eyelids and ears of the baby are forming and the arms and legs are "well formed."  At 12 weeks, the baby starts to make its own movements and the sex organs of the baby become clearer.  Yes, we now can know whether the mother is expecting a little boy or girl.  I am ashamed that our state permits and now seeks to allow all forms of infanticide.  If you say, "it is not a baby," then again, I urge you to review the facts on WebMD and to stop pretending that science does not tell us what is going on.  As my fifteen-year-old brother said, "Wait, am I supposed to pretend that I don't know a baby is growing inside the mother?"

I urge you to reject the extreme abortion bill known as the Reproductive Health Act (S.438 Stewart-Cousins).  This proposal is no simple update to New York's laws, as proponents claim.  It is a radical bill that would allow non-physicians to perform abortions, lift all restrictions on late-term abortions, and could compel all medical facilities, including Catholic hospitals, to allow abortions.

Unfortunately, there are no meaningful regulations or restrictions on abortion in New York State.  We already have the highest rate of abortion in the country.  There is no need for this bill.  It would prove extremely dangerous for viable fully-formed unborn infants, for women's health and for religious liberty rights.

I strongly urge you to oppose Senate bill 438.  I am a young voter and this issue is dear to my heart.  Please know I will be checking to see how you vote on this matter, and as life is the most basic human right, will not be voting for you ever again in my lifetime if you support this bill.

*The first paragraph is my own; the rest is from the form letter of the NYSCC.

  1. Thank you for writing this post. I didn't know that there was a law about this, I will also voice my concern to the lawmakers.

  2. Trista, thank you so much for opposing this radical bill. Is there a link to the NYSCC campaign? They usually send out emails, but I haven't received one lately.
